The administration’s rule narrowing eligibility for the Public Service Loan Forgiveness program will not go into effect, after two federal judges blocked the rule last week.
The regulation would have changed the definition of a “qualifying employer” under PSLF, giving the administration broad authority to exclude any programs it didn’t like. As a result of the two court orders, federal employee borrowers do not need to worry about losing eligibility for PSLF based on past employment, including state or local service.
NTEU’s legislative agenda includes advocating for improving the PSLF for public sector employees who have served for 10 years or more. At the urging of NTEU members, the Biden administration instituted fixes to the program that resulted in more than $62 billion in debt relief for over 871,000 borrowers.
