IRS Imposes Income Limits for Program NTEU to Offer Free Tax Preparation Benefit
NTEU is pleased to announce we are again offering our members the popular tax preparation benefit once the 2022 filing season opens on Jan. 24. This exclusive benefit gives NTEU members free access to TaxSlayer tax preparation software for your federal and state returns and free electronic filing for both.
However, beginning this year, the IRS has imposed an income limit on the program that restricts its availability to those members with an annual household income of $73,000 or less.
Once NTEU became aware of the income limit, we immediately reached out to IRS officials to understand the purpose of the limit since we were told repeatedly last year that the tax prep benefit would have no income limit. NTEU is urging the IRS to expand eligibility to all members before the filing season ends, but our discussions with the IRS will likely continue past the Jan. 24 start of the tax filing season.
For the 2022 filing season, NTEU is again partnering with Prepare + Prosper to offer the free tax preparation benefit. For more than 50 years, Prepare + Prosper has helped individuals and families with financial issues, including tax preparation and tax clinics. If you have a federal tax question, Prepare + Prosper can help or you can get guidance from built-in help features in the software.
Watch for details on the benefit as we get closer to Jan. 24. We will also provide updates, likely in early February, as we continue our efforts to broaden eligibility in the program to all NTEU members.
