A Pay Cut in Exchange for Our Rights? No Thanks

Forcing new federal employees to give up part of their paycheck in exchange for the workplace rights they are entitled to by law, as outlined in the House-passed budget reconciliation bill, will dissuade people from careers in public service and erode the nation’s nonpartisan, merit-based federal workforce.

“Federal pay and benefits are not favors to be traded away,” said National President Doreen Greenwald. “They are the basic compact that the federal government makes with the people who swear an oath of public service and join the federal workforce, which is why this unprecedented proposal is so wrong.”

Now sitting in the Senate, the bill
includes a provision that new hires would be considered at-will employees—meaning they could be fired without cause—unless they agree to contribute more of their salary toward their retirement plan. Read more

NTEU Sends Letter in Support of Federal Workers’ Comp Program

National President Doreen Greenwald sent a letter to a House subcommittee last week following its hearing on proposals to reform the Federal Employees’ Compensation Act (FECA), which serves as the workers’ compensation program for federal employees. In the letter, she expressed NTEU’s support of proposals to improve and update the program, including a House bill to allow physician assistants and nurse practitioners to approve claims for FECA benefits. Greenwald voiced opposition to cuts discussed at the hearing that would dramatically reduce insurance benefits for those who are older or who have a family.

NTEU will continue to advocate for fair treatment of federal employees who are injured on the job.

NTEU Supports Efforts to Protect Employees' Personal Information

NTEU supports efforts in Congress to protect federal employees’ personal information. In a letter to OPM, Sen. Mark Warner (D-Va.) is urging the agency not to cut identity theft monitoring services for federal employees impacted by the 2015 OPM data breaches.

NTEU successfully pressed for legislation mandating 10 years of protection for federal employees and retirees whose personal information may have been compromised by those data breaches. However, that benefit is set to expire in 2026.

“I urge you to ensure that identity theft protection services for the impacted individuals from the 2015 OPM breach continue, as required by law,” the letter states. “Any attempt to prematurely phase out services to the victims of the 2015 OPM breach will introduce tremendous risk to former and current federal employees and create an opportunity for America’s adversaries and criminals to target and potentially further compromise millions of Americans.”

NTEU continues to urge lawmakers to protect federal employees’ personal information
and previously supported legislation that would provide lifetime credit monitoring and identity protection services for those impacted.
