    NTEU Comments on Proposal to Expand Hiring of Interns

    In comments submitted to the Office of Personnel Management, NTEU expressed concern that an expansion in hiring authority could undermine the competitive personnel system.

    The interim rule will allow the hiring of interns without competition or posting of the positions. The interns can then be promoted or converted into permanent hires without further competition.

    While NTEU supports additional paid internships in the federal government, the union suggested that the government can improve recruitment by supporting legislation that increases federal salaries. Specifically, the FAIR Act which would enact a 3.2 percent increase in 2022 helping make federal jobs more competitive with those in the private sector. Learn more
