House Passes Debt Limit Bill with Funding Cuts

The House last week passed legislation that would temporarily increase the debt limit under harmful long-term conditions including cutting agency funding and rescinding nearly all the new funding the IRS received last year.

Senate leaders have announced they have no intention of considering this legislation which is also opposed by the administration.

“This bill is an attempt to steamroll the American people into thinking that these two issues are intertwined. They are not,” said National President Tony Reardon, who sent a letter to House members ahead of the vote urging them to oppose the legislation.

Congressional leaders and the White House are under heightened pressure to come up with a solution after Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen yesterday warned that the U.S. could default on its debt as early as June 1, if Congress does not raise or suspend the debt limit before then.

NTEU will continue to press lawmakers to raise the nation’s debt ceiling and avoid a catastrophic default, and then properly fund agencies so they can serve the American public.
