These Members of Congress Say You Are Overpaid

A prominent congressional group is looking to cripple federal agencies and severely impact you and your family!

The House Republican Study Committee recently released its 2024 annual budget proposal and it isn’t pretty. Understand, we are not talking about some small, fringe group here. There are 175 lawmakers in this caucus, which means the vast majority of the Republicans in the U.S. House subscribe to this unconscionable broadside against the entire federal workforce (See the list of members, by state).

In excruciating detail, they list all the ways they want to shrink your paycheck, scale back your retirement, take away your paid leave, weaken your health insurance, make it easier to fire you and limit your workplace rights.

So far the national media has focused on the group’s proposal to slash federal spending by $16.3 TRILLION over 10 years, which by itself would cripple federal agencies. But NTEU members need to be aware of exactly what this group would do to your federal career.

The lawmakers, in writing, begin with the premise that not enough federal employees get fired, that your salaries are “bloated,” and that you are “unqualified and unelected bureaucrats.”

Here are just a few examples of their misguided and mean-spirited proposals:

    • Reduce the amount of paid leave

    • Cut the number of employees who receive pay raises

    • Cut the number of employees who receive performance awards and cut the dollar amounts

    • Change the General Schedule to allow for lower pay rates of certain employees

    • Increase employee contributions toward retirement and reduce the benefits

    • Reduce or eliminate cost-of-living adjustments for FERS and CSRS retirees

    • Eliminate the FERS supplement for those required to retire before being eligible for Social Security

    • Increase employees contribution to FEHB

    • Eliminate FEHB retiree benefits for new hires

    • Fire more federal employees with a shorter and faster process

    • Limit employee rights to appeal disciplinary actions

If and when any of these harmful ideas comes to a vote, you’ll be hearing from us about how to voice your opposition.

So, don’t wait.  Now is the time to take action and fight back.  Get to know your members of Congress, including a breakdown of their views on our union's priority issues, with exclusive NTEU congressional profiles. Click here for what you need to know to be an informed voter and advocate.
