Bill Provides Lifetime ID Protection for OPM Data Breach Victims

Federal employees who were victims of the 2015 Office of Personnel Management (OPM) data breach would receive lifetime identity theft protection under legislation introduced in the House last week.

NTEU successfully pressed for legislation mandating 10 years of protection for federal employees and retirees whose personal information may have been compromised by the 2015 data breaches. That benefit is set to expire in 2026 and NTEU is supporting this bill to provide lifetime credit monitoring and identity protection services for those impacted.

The Reducing the Effects of the Cyberattack on OPM Victims Emergency Response Act (H.R. 7236) was introduced by Del. Eleanor Holmes Norton (D-D.C.) and Rep. C.A. “Dutch” Ruppersberger (D-Md.).
