SUMMARY: Senator Bob Casey (D-PA) has introduced legislation to provide an above the line tax deduction for union dues. Senator Robert Casey, Jr (D-PA) has introduced S. 738, the Tax Fairness for Workers Act. This legislation would give working Americans an “above the line” tax deduction of union dues regardless of if they itemize or not. For taxpayers who itemize, it would also restore tax deductions for job search expenses, out-of-pocket costs for uniforms and other work expenses as was allowed before 2017. Corporations and business executives currently enjoy a wide range of tax deductions, including dues they pay for membership in professional associations. It is only fair that union members, the backbone of the American middle class, also get a break. After all, strong unions not only benefit union members but millions of non-union workers as well. NTEU has strongly endorsed this legislation. I would urge our members to learn more about this legislation and actions they can take to support it. For more information, click here. |
