House Freedom Caucus Fine with Shutdown 'We Don't Fear a Government Shutdown' Yes, you read that right. The House Freedom Caucus, a powerful group made up of 22 percent of Republicans in the House, held a press conference Tuesday about their strategy to force deep cuts to agency spending in fiscal year 2024. “We don’t fear a government shutdown,” said Rep. Bob Good (R-VA), a leader in the caucus. Rep. Good doubled down on the idea of blocking the appropriation bills, refusing a temporary extension and allowing government spending to screech to a halt as a bargaining tactic. Good has an 11 percent voting record from NTEU on issues important to federal employees. “We should not fear a government shutdown. Most of what we do up here is bad anyway,” Good said. “Most of what we do up here hurts the American people.” NTEU strongly opposes this hostile attitude toward frontline federal employees and the services they provide to the country. NTEU is fighting for two outcomes: Passing all 12 appropriation bills to avoid a government shutdown that threatens your paychecks, and preventing deep, across-the-board cuts that will impact staffing levels and agency resources. Ask your members of Congress to fund federal agencies and keep government open and operational. Send a letter here. |
