  • Paid Parental Leave is Here
    Oct 01, 2020

    Congratulations!

After years of labor and a difficult delivery, the paid parental leave program has finally arrived for federal employees.

It has been 20 years since NTEU first endorsed the idea and 10 months since Congress passed it into law and now paid parental leave is officially available to all federal employees who welcome a new child into their home after Oct. 1.

Giving employees up to 12 weeks of paid leave to care for their growing families is the largest expansion of federal leave benefits in recent history and represents major progress toward a more family-friendly work environment.

To help all of us celebrate this achievement, NTEU wants to recognize (and send some gifts!) to the first 20 NTEU members who use paid parental leave for the birth, adoption or foster placement of a child. If you welcome a new child into your family in the first few weeks of October and are taking advantage of this new benefit, let us know. Send a quick email to nteu-pr@nteu.org and you may receive a gift basket.

Federal employees who maintain their commitment to public service while also becoming parents deserve a little extra help to manage it all, and NTEU is honored to have played a part in giving working families more time at home to bond, without sacrificing their income.

It is a testament to our union that so many members fought so hard for this benefit, even if their own children were long since grown. NTEU believes in paying it forward and paid parental leave is a benefit not just for current federal employees but for generations to come.

Every NTEU victory for workers becomes part of our proud legacy of making the federal government a place where the best and brightest want to serve their country, raise a family, retire with financial security and contribute to the American dream.

If you have questions about the new program or need help in accessing the leave, contact your local NTEU chapter.
