NTEU joined several other public sector unions in a joint letter to Education Secretary Miguel Cardona seeking immediate action to forgive the student loan debt of employees who have served 10 years in the public sector and were promised relief through the Public Service Loan Forgiveness (PSLF). Today, NTEU joined with other public sector unions representing more than 10 million public service workers in delivering a letter to Secretary Miguel Cardona at the Department of Education. Our message is simple: take immediate action to provide public sector workers the student debt relief they were promised. As you know, we communicated with former Secretary De Vos several times about the inadequate and confusing directives on the PSLF that led to the vast majority of those who served, with the understanding that after 10 years of paying student loans the remainder of those loans would be forgiven, being denied loan forgiveness. In fact, when the first participants reached 10 years of service in 2017, only 1.5% of the PSLF loans were forgiven and the program has languished without clear direction since then. Now, as more people become eligible, it is even more necessary to provide relief, and we hope the new administration will take the necessary steps to ensure those who serve receive the relief they were promised. I will keep you informed about any new developments. Download: JtLtrrePSLF(Attach).pdf |
