Standoff on Debt Ceiling Continues in Congress While Congress passed a stopgap funding bill last week to avert a government shutdown, lawmakers are still facing an Oct. 18 deadline to address the debt limit to avoid the United States going into default on some of its debt obligations. The House passed a bill to suspend the debt ceiling until December 2022, but Senate Republicans continue to block efforts to vote to extend the debt limit. Majority Leader Chuck Schumer has scheduled a vote to proceed the bill on Wednesday, but as of this time it is expected to fail without Republican support. NTEU continues to urge lawmakers to suspend the debt ceiling to avoid a financial crisis. |
