Payroll Tax Deferral Confusion Continues
There remain more questions than answers regarding the implementation of the payroll tax deferral plan for federal employees. It is apparent that the administration is moving forward with the deferral of Social Security taxes for federal employees but there is no clear information on when this might affect your paychecks. The administration has yet to explain to employees how the deferred taxes will be recouped in 2021, whether through additional payroll tax withholdings for several weeks or months, or a lump sum. And, there are other implementation details involving the impact of pay raises and employee departures on recouping the deferred taxes that are still unknown. NTEU is working to get answers and will share additional information as it becomes available. The program calls for employees making less than $3,999 per pay period to have Social Security taxes deferred through the end of the year. But, absent unlikely legislation, the extra money in your paycheck is only temporary because the money must be paid back in the first few months of 2021.
