NTEU in the News: Reardon Talks About Harmful Spending Cuts Now that the debt ceiling compromise bill has been signed into law, what does it mean for federal agencies and their employees?GovExec article. Under the bill, non-defense spending remains essentially flat for fiscal 2024 and increases by 1 percent in fiscal 2025. The legislation also includes a provision giving Congress until Jan. 1 to pass 12 spending bills for fiscal years 2024 or 2025 or a 1 percent spending cut to defense and non-defense accounts kicks in. National President Tony Reardon discussed the impacts of the budget deal yesterday in a“Across-the-board spending cuts are a harmful detour away from the hard work that Congress should be doing to decide where the government should invest its resources,” Reardon told GovExec. For the IRS, the bill reprograms approximately $20 billion of the $80 billion provided to the agency over the next two fiscal years. NTEU will continue to fight for the support and resources federal agencies need and to restore the IRS funding. And while the agreement curtails some federal spending over the next two years, the issue of a federal pay raise is not a done deal. NTEU continues to strongly support the FAIR Act, providing an average 8.7 percent pay raise in 2024. |
