ICYMI: Federal Employees Get More Annual Leave This Year

Most federal employees will get a few extra hours of annual leave for 2023. 

That’s because federal employees whose leave year began Jan. 1, 2023, will end up with 27 pay periods for the 2023 calendar year, rather than the usual 26.

Since the leave year will end on January 13, 2024, most federal employees will accrue an additional 4, 6, or 8 hours of annual leave in the 2023 leave year based on each individual employee’s annual leave accrual rate, according to a memo released by the Office of Personnel Management.

However, the maximum carryover ceiling on annual leave remains the same. If the additional leave puts an employee over the cap, they’ll be subject to “use or lose.”

Federal employees whose leave year began on Jan. 8, 2023, are not affected.
