Congress Returns to Another Government Funding Deadline Congress returns from the Thanksgiving recess to a familiar priority: passing government funding bills. However, none are scheduled to hit the House or Senate floors this week. Lawmakers face a mid-January deadline to fund the government or enter a partial government shutdown. The current continuing resolution keeps agencies funded at current levels through either Jan. 19, 2024, or Feb. 2, 2024, depending on the agency. With the holidays approaching, Congress does not have much time to act on appropriations bills before the first deadline of Jan. 19. House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-La.) announced that he will not pass another short-term spending bill, raising the stakes for a shutdown given House Republicans continue to push for significant cuts to agency funding that Democrats oppose. NTEU will continue to press lawmakers to avoid a government shutdown and provide adequate full-year funding for the remainder of this fiscal year. |
