NTEU Chapter 296
National Park Service
  • Director of NPS making the case for budget priorities
    May 24, 2022

    Dear Colleagues,

On May 18, I testified before the House Appropriations Committee’s Subcommittee on Interior, Environment and Related Agencies, answering questions about our budget request for FY23. I’m always grateful for these opportunities to highlight our work and make the case for the resources we need both to be good stewards and to build a more connected, empowered workforce.  And I want to share some of that conversation with you.

Our FY23 budget request totals $3.6 billion, a $345 million increase over the FY22 budget. That includes more than $220 million for tackling climate change and conserving our natural resources, more than $36 million to advance racial justice and equity for underserved communities, and more than $148 million to restore staffing capacity by adding more than 1,000 FTEs.  It also requests much needed investment in the workforce, including support for employee housing, increased bandwidth connectivity, and employee mental health and wellness.

As many of you know, the National Park Service enjoys strong bipartisan support, which mirrors the American public’s appreciation for what we all do and the places we protect. The committee was very engaged on a range of issues including climate change research, our deferred maintenance and repair backlog, and our response to the Colorado River drought.

I was proud to share how dedicated you all are to our important mission, and grateful for the committee's focus on our staffing needs. We also discussed the need to share all the stories of America, including the difficult ones, to help us build toward a more perfect union where every American sees themselves in our park system.

I invite you all to read the testimony or watch the hearing to learn more.

Thanks for all that you do,

    Chuck
