NTEU Opposes Nominee to Federal Labor Relations Authority
NTEU reiterated our opposition to Catherine Bird’s nomination for General Counsel of the Federal Labor Relations Authority (FLRA), the independent agency that governs labor relations between the federal government and its employees. National President Tony Reardon sent a letter to the Senate Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee opposing the administration's choice for General Counsel given Bird's lack of experience in federal labor law and the central role she played in bad faith bargaining at the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS). "[Bird] eagerly championed a scheme to weaken federal-sector unions and strip employees of long-standing collective bargaining rights by essentially foreclosing any collective bargaining with NTEU to ensure that the dispute would promptly be sent to the Federal Service Impasses Panel," Reardon wrote. While the committee voted along party lines to approve Bird's nomination last year, the full Senate did not consider it before year's end. The president re-nominated Bird earlier this year, and the committee is scheduled to vote on the nomination this week. |
