NTEU Chapter 296
National Park Service
  • House Passes Inflation Reduction Act
    Aug 13, 2022

SUMMARY:  The House passes historic legislation providing the IRS with a substantial increase in dedicated funding over the next decade and additional funding for the National Park Service and EPA as well.  The bill now goes to the President who is expected to sign it into law.

The House of Representatives, by a vote of 220 to 207, passed the Inflation Reduction Act, H.R. 5376, which is designed to pay down the nation’s debt, cut health care and drug costs, boost American energy, address climate change, and ensure fair administration of the tax code.  Under the bill, the IRS would receive a substantial increase in dedicated funding over the next ten years to improve tax enforcement and customer service.  Additional funding is also provided for the National Park Service and the Environmental Protection Agency.

NTEU strongly supports this historic legislation that would provide the IRS with a multi-year mandatory funding stream which will allow the agency to undertake a multi-year process of hiring and training staff and upgrade of its systems necessary to improve the IRS’ capability to deliver its mission.  Overall funding for the IRS has decreased by almost 20 percent on an inflation-adjusted basis since FY 2010 and resulted in the loss of 15,000 employees between 2010 and 2021, including many frontline enforcement personnel, and diminished the IRS’ capacity to maximize taxpayer compliance, prevent tax evasion, and reduce the deficit.

NTEU is also pleased that the legislation provides $500 million to the National Park Service to hire additional employees to serve in units of the National Park System or national historic or national scenic trails administered by the National Park Service.  The EPA would receive additional funding to help administer programs to address climate change under the bill.

The legislation will now go to the President who is expected to sign it into law.  While we celebrate the passage of this important bill, NTEU will continue working with our supporters to ensure that all federal agencies are provided with the necessary resources to meet their missions
