    Jan 21, 2021
SUMMARY:  President-elect Biden unveiled his American Rescue Plan, the first part of his two-step plan for addressing the public health and economic crisis facing the nation, which includes some provisions to assist federal employees.  Yesterday, President-elect Biden announced his coronavirus relief legislative package, called the American Rescue Plan, the first half of his plan to address the public health and economic challenges facing the country.  The second half of the plan, focused on jobs and economic recovery, is expected to be released in February. In addition to provisions to help stimulate the economy and provide help to Americans impacted by the pandemic, the $1.9 trillion rescue plan includes several provisions that would impact federal employees.  Under the President-elect’s proposal, federal employees would receive additional paid sick and family and medical leave to help parents with caregiving responsibilities when a child or loved one’s school or care center is closed; for people who have or are caring for people with COVID-19 symptoms, or who are quarantining due to exposure; and for people needing to take time to get the vaccine, including 12 weeks of paid COVID-related FMLA leave, which would be available to federal employees for the first time, and an extension of the 80 hours of COVID-related emergency paid sick leave that expired in December.  Employees would receive a maximum paid leave benefit of $1,400 per week and these emergency paid leave measures would be available until September 30, 2021.Legislative text of the package has not yet been released.  NTEU will provide additional updates on the proposal as it becomes available and will continue to push for Congress to includethese and other provisions to support and protect federal employees in upcoming COVID-relief legislation
