Agency Funding Battles Begin on Capitol Hill The debate over fiscal year 2025 agency funding has kicked off in Washington with Republicans and Democrats holding nearly opposite views about how much money certain agencies need to operate next year. In general, the opening appropriations salvo from House Republicans is to slash funding across much of the government, far apart from President Biden’s proposal to preserve or increase agency budgets. Just today, Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen testified in the Senate that IRS needs to maintain its current funding levels in order to carry out its missions and serve taxpayers. And a few hours before her testimony, House Republicans released a plan to remove billions from the IRS budget next year, targeting money that is supposed to go to enforcement. Appropriations season is always contentious, but these latest developments illustrate just how intense the battle will be to avoid drastic cuts to operations and possibly even staffing levels. Watch for more updates as the summer progresses and ways for you to support adequate funding levels. |
