House Committee Passes Federal Union Busting Legislation The ability of NTEU or any federal union to do its work would be undermined by legislation (H.R. 9594) that recently passed out of committee. Under the bill, sponsored by Rep. Scott Perry (R-PA), unions would be charged for using time to represent employees and agency resources such as office space and computers. Additionally, union officials would be subject to disciplinary action for assisting an employee without recording the time. Any fees an agency assesses on a union that is not paid within 90 days would lead to the union being banned from further use of a union representative’s time and agency resources and could ultimately lead to the union’s decertification as the exclusive representative of employees. This union-busting bill passed out of the House Oversight and Accountability Committee with only Republican support. In advance of the committee vote, NTEU sent a letter opposing the legislation. Our union will continue to fight against any legislation aimed at weakening NTEU and other federal unions. |
