    NTEU Warns Against Budget Cuts to the IRS

    NTEU is warning Congress that taxpayers would face reductions in customer service and a larger federal deficit if the Internal Revenue Service suffers an additional $20 billion in budget cuts.

    That money is at risk unless Congress takes action to protect that funding in the next continuing resolution and ensure any year end funding measure does not strip it from the agency.

    The IRS originally received a long-term $80 billion investment under the Inflation Reduction Act, but $20 billion of that has been rescinded. Losing more of that funding would affect customer service, modernization efforts and enforcement.

    “IRS employees have been hard at work making sure these investments are put to good use and their success has reduced wait times for assistance, expanded in-person help in offices all over the country and recovered $1.3 billion in unpaid tax debts from the ultra-wealthy,” said National President Doreen Greenwald. “The Inflation Reduction Act is helping restore and improve IRS operations and the American people deserve to see that progress continue.” Read more
