Allies Stand Up as Attacks Against Federal Unions Escalate

Last week, the day before the President signed an executive order eliminating the collective bargaining rights of more than one million federal employees, Republicans on the House Committee on Oversight and Government Reform, led by Chairman James Comer (R-KY), passed several bills undermining unions in the federal government and granting broad authority to President Trump to reorganize the government, including eliminating agency functions or even whole agencies, and reduce the number of federal employees.

These bills are part of a broader strategy by the Trump administration to dismantle the federal government and fire federal employees. If President Trump can’t overturn laws and destroy agencies on his own, congressional Republicans appear ready to step in and give him authority to do so.

    Standing Strong With Us

Our allies have been vocal in their opposition to these attacks.

During the committee's markup, Rep. Melanie Stansbury (D-NM) voiced strong opposition to the reorganization bill, accusing Republicans of enabling a "reckless, lawless, and chaotic dismantling of critical federal programs" and warned of the serious consequences that could result from granting the President such unchecked executive power.  Ranking member Gerry Connolly (D-VA) also strongly criticized the bill saying, “This bill isn't about reorganizing government, it's about dismantling it.”

Allies from both sides of the aisle have also spoken out in opposition to the President’s EO to strip union rights from over a million federal employees.

Representatives Brian Fitzpatrick (R-PA) and Rep. Jared Golden (D-ME) this week introduced a bipartisan bill to undo the executive order.  Let’s show our appreciation to Rep. Fitzpatrick, Rep Golden and tell your member of Congress to cosponsor the bill! House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries (D-NY) described it as a blatant power grab undermining the foundational principles of American democracy. In the Senate, Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY) called it an assault on democracy and workers' rights.

Every Democrat in the House and Senate signed letters to President Trump demanding he rescind this EO and defending union rights for federal employees.

And from the other side of the aisle, a group of Republican Congressmen led by Rep. Fitzpatrick sent a letter to President Trump urging him to reconsider and rescind the Executive Order.

Many other allies made statements and took to social media to express their support for federal employees and our right to be represented by a union.
