Social Security Benefits Restored as Congress Eliminates WEP and GPO
Bill Awaits Biden’s Signature
Social Security benefits for certain federal retirees will be fully restored after Congress approved the NTEU-endorsed Social Security Fairness Act today.
The law eliminates two problematic rules known as the Government Pension Offset and the Windfall Elimination Provision because they unfairly cut benefits to nearly 3 million retirees with a history of public service, or their survivors.
NTEU members for years have urged Congress to eliminate WEP and GPO. The hard work paid off as the legislation passed the Senate today with bipartisan support. The bill now awaits President Biden’s signature.
